The most iconic brand from every state

corporate states of america

  • Graphic designer Steve Lovelace created a map he titled “The Corporate States of America.”
  • The map shows a brand that is associated with each state.
  • Whether the company was founded in the state or has headquarters there, each brand has a connection to the state it was matched with.

Steve Lovelace designed “The Corporate States of America,” a map that pairs up every state (and D.C.) with the logo of a brand that the state has a close connection to.

While Lovelace admitted that the process of choosing the brand for each state was subjective, he explained the methodology behind this map, by choosing brands that are still in business and have ties to the state. Lovelace also explained that he “went with the company that I thought best represented the state, rather than the biggest or most notorious.”

ALABAMA: Saks

While Saks 5th Avenue currently has its headquarters in New York City, the company was acquired by Proffitt’s in 1998, and the company officially changed its name to Saks Incorporated. It was later acquired by Hudson Bay Company.

Proffitt’s also acquired Parisian in the ’90s — which was founded in Birmingham — and had its headquarters there for a time.

ALASKA: Carr’s

Carr’s was Alaska’s largest food retailer for years, until its debt grew too large and it was bought out by Safeway. Now almost all Carr’s in Alaska are officially called Carr’s-Safeway.

Safeway merged with Albertson’s in 2015.

ARIZONA: Best Western

Best Western’s corporate headquarters are in Phoenix.

It’s called Best Western because all the properties were originally all west of the Mississippi River, but now Best Western is international — it just opened its first hotel in Myanmar.
